Subject:Please help with Japanese characters in mark
Posted By: Martin Michels Mon, Jan 25, 2016 IP: 84.26.216.123

Hi,

Can anyone help me with the missing characters (?) in the mark shown in the picture below.
The site were this mark was found, gave as translation:
"Satsuma Yaki Kokaen Oite Ryokuzan Zo"
I will be very grateful if someone can supply me with the mssing characters and the correct text.
Thanks in advance,
Martin.

I believe the characters are:

薩摩焼 - SatsumaYaki
紅華園 - KoukaEn
於緑山造 - Oite Ryokuzan Zo

I believe "Oite" may serve as a conjunction like "Wherein" with reference the previous stack as a place name ("Red Flower Garden"? or Tea House"?), but defer to our Japanese experts.

Best regards,

Bill H.

not sure of the first missing character but I would guess 红,which is followed by 華,and 緑 is the character from your last column.

薩摩焼 紅華園 於 緑山 造
'Satsumayaki Kokaen oite Rokuzan zô'
(Satsuma ware, made by Rokuzan in Kokaen)

De name of the decorator can (eventually) also be read as 'Ryokuzan'.

Guy.

Thank you all very much in helping me, it's very appreciated.
Another one of my puzzles solved.
There may come some more in the near future, but always after I tried my utmost in figuring it out myself.
Thanks again,
