Subject:Help with large porcelain covered jar.
Posted By: Joel Stuart Tue, Jan 26, 2016 IP: 174.30.251.95

Hi. This is a large, (10" wide by 12" high), covered porcelain jar. I believe the technique is called sgraffito. It is definitely porcelain and has a black or very dark blue glaze on the inside of the jar. There are no markings on the base.
I can't find an example of the stylized markings or the color on the internet.
Any help with identifying what the jar is would be greatly appreciated. It's really a handsome piece.
Thanks very much. Joel

Hello there,

it is an unusual cizhou ware sgraffiato jar, Hebei province.

Modern style, shape and carving not really made to copy ancient ones but at the same time surface treatment suggest it was made to fake burial patina.

Most probably dating back to the 80' 90' when production quality was at his lowest.

Excuse my direct comment but I cant refrain it : creepy

Thank you very much for your comment and the information. I appreciate your candor. I'm a designer and I think the jar is a great design piece even though it may not be the highest quality. Thank you again.
Joel
