Subject:Japanese bronze mark
Posted By: M Smith Fri, Feb 05, 2016 IP: 81.102.82.241

Hello
This is on a large Japanese bronze vase with birds, lizards and snakes in relief, on a separate base with sea turtles. Can anyone help me identify the mark please?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

The mark, shown upside down, reads 大日本 吉田造 京都 - 'Dai Nippon, Yoshida zô, Kyôto' (Greater Japan or Imperial Japan, made by Yoshida in Kyoto).

This mark was used by the Yoshida workshop, specialised in casting bronze censers, vases and dishes, operating in Kyoto in the 1870s-80s. The mark here,is written from the left to the right, which is uncommon. Usually, Japanese was written from the right to the left before WWII.

Guy.
