Subject:Rose medallion plates
Posted By: Adriano Thu, Jul 21, 2016 IP: 79.16.142.54

I have two rose medallion plates with the same mark.
The mark translation could be “produced in Macau”.
I have no idea of the period; the mark is not common to find on web: for instance, it is not in the Gotheborg site.
I have just find on ebay a similar plate, same mark, said to be late 19th century.
I think these plates are not very old, probably late 20th century.
Any idea is welcome.
Best regards,
Adriano.

The mark reads down and across from the top right as "Made in Macao" (Aomen Zhizao). I believe this kind of transfer decoration in the rose medallion style has been and likely still is being made at painting factories in both Hong Kong and Macao since at least the 1960s-1970s. Gotheborg shows a related mark on a 1970's vase that reads "Enameled in Macao" (Aomen Jiacai - literally "Enamel added at Macao").

Best regards,

Bill H.
