Subject:Help identifying miniature etching?

Hello,
Another antique store impulse buy. This is a small etching or painting, entirely using black ink on an unknown white substance, possibly shell (I have confirmed its not resin). It is solid white and flat on the back, and covex on the front and about as thick as the dime used for scale. I bought a pair, with the other similar but depicting a different figure. Curious to know origin, era, and use if at all possible. Regards.

Have seen bracelets constructed of little decorated ivory plaques about that size, framed in metal and linked together.
