Subject:Mark Identification Help-Chinese flower vase with birds and 2 bats
Posted By: Becky Wed, Nov 02, 2016 IP: 96.236.133.96

Hi. I am looking to find out if anyone knows information on this mark? I love this vase, it is a very light green (almost grayish blue) with this nice flower design and there are 2 bats on the back. The mark on the bottom is smudged/blurred. There are so many marks out there, and haven't seen this one yet, but I could be looking at it the wrong way. Thank you!

Your late 20th century transfer-decorated vase has a stamped-on apocryphal mark of "Made during the Tongzhi Reign" (Tongzhi Nian Zhi) shown on its left side. As meant to be viewed, the characters would be read from the top right down and across as follows:

年同
製治

This mark is No 1499 in "The New & Revised Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics" (2013 2nd Edition) by Gerald Davison. The actual reign period was 1862-74.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Becky, Your mark reads 同治年製 ("made in the Tongzhi reign"), and is rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise in your photo. However though the Tongzhi reign was 1856-1876, your vase is modern, perhaps a few decades old.
