Jose,

You have done well in consulting reference books. You have learned from them that there are no easy ways to differentiate Dehua porcelains from different time periods with certainty.

Weight, color, skill of execution, method of production, all are factors. You will find both molded pieces (especially figurines) and hand-made Dehua wares.

There is no substitute for seeing many pieces in person, and handling as many as you can legally and politely put your hands on. Even then, there will be uncertainty in quite a few examples.

It would be great if all pieces were accurately marked with a date of production. The producers were not thinking of us, and did not have in mind that there should be some way to tell whether a piece was made in 1710 or 1880.

Many times all we can do is decide whether the subject or form and the quality of execution are to our liking: the object itself may tell us no more than this.

I wish I could answer the question in a more helpful way!

Best regards,
Judy
