Youth Artists for HungerFREE Campaign

Youth is the collective energy and if properly chanalized, results in positive changes in the life of poor and socially excluded community. Youth is the most energetic age group holding the vast promises for the eradication of hunger and injustice. Preciously for this reason, Global Youth Action Project (GYAP) has been envisaged so as to mobilize them by providing a creative space. This project is the part of global action for FreeHunger campaign as been implemented in 10 countries respectively Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, The Gambia, Kenya, Brazil, Italy and UK. Campaign actions in all these 10 countries culminate at United Nation General Assembly going to be held on 8th September in New York, USA. ActionAid take HungerFREE to the doorstep of the UN, demanding justice for the 854 million people living in hunger.

Two major campaign events respectively musical event and art project have been identified. Musical event was already launched on 2nd July, 2007 mobilizing approximately 1300 youths and was a huge success. The art project will target to reach out to thousand of youths so rights to food, food sovereignty and food security could be made issues of youth too. For this reason, through this project, AAN joins hand with six highly potential youth artists, out of which, three are lady. AAN helps them to create their painting/sculpture around the hunger theme. The product in the form of painting/sculpture/installation art will be later put in exhibition to exert pressure to state to come up with the clear position on food sovereignty and rights to food.

The artists include i) Juju Kaji Maharjan ([email protected] coordinator of the group) ii) Raj Kumar Prajapati ([email protected]) iii) Manju Shyaula ([email protected]) iv) Uday Karmacharya ([email protected]) v) Sudha Chaudary and vi) Sanchita Lama. All artists have been involved in creating and exhibiting their arts on way or another in the past. All are under 25 and very dedicated to create their own space in this highly creative and imaginative field.


III. OBJECTIVES

The primary objectives of Youth Artists for HungerFREE (YahuFREE) Campaign are as follows:

1. To create youth artists as a core campaigner who then creates a campaign messages and through their art works disseminate to masses of youth.
2. To build the campaign actions around painting/sculpture to exert the pressure to state for review the Millennium Development Gaols (MDGs).
3. To mobilize thousand of youth around artworks this is based on hunger so they will be made aware on hunger and its associated causes and consequences.
4. To ensure youth solidarity for wider land rights movement, women's access on land movement and food rights movement.
IV. EXPECTED OUTCOMES

�h All six youth artists are converted in to core campaigner with passion and adequate understanding on hunger issues.
�h All six youth artists are oriented and inducted through orientation workshops
�h 30 paintings/sculpture created for exhibition and ready for adapting in campaign materials
�h Exhibition organized with thousand of youth taking campaign actions including signature campaign, rally/demonstration
�h Wider and deeper sensitization among youth on hunger issues
