pair of hand painted lotus vases

I just found this pair of vases at a thrift shop up the street and bought them for $3 each. I'd just returned from a trip to the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, where I saw a lot of very beautiful work painted for Chinese emperors over the centuries.

I throw pottery and glaze it, so I could tell the work was hand painted, and no matter who did it, they did a beautiful job.

The blue glaze is so dark as to seem almost black. The artist painstakingly painted around every leaf and filigree, and all the veins of the leaves are finely executed.

on the bottom of each there is a mark. one mark looks like a letter J and on the bottom of the other one it appears to be an exclamation point. They are hand done in blue.

The glaze is darker than most oriental vases that I have seen -- it is inky blue black, but you can see the individual brush strokes in places in bright sunlight.
