An object left by a recently deceased friend

A friend of mine recently died intestate. She had been wealthy at one time but had been left nearly destitute by unfortunate circumstances.
Among the things that we ,her friends, have found of her remaining possession is an odd - I'd venture ugly little carving.
This thing is supposedly carved of horn bill ivory. Before you chide me- I am a biologist and would never have purchased such a thing, but before dying she had told another friend that this thing is valuable.
I am not interested in selling this, indeed I have no claim to it but it is in my possession and I would like to pass it on to someone who is entitled to anything of value remaining in the estate.
I will attach some pictures of it and would love to know if it is precious or worthless. It is approximately 2 1/2 inches wide by about 3 inches tall. My friend had traveled extensively and had visited China and Japan in 1982 which may be when she purchased this item. I can find no identifying marks on it. Some decorative stones around the mouth seem to have fallen off and it does not have any writing on it or the stained box that it came in.
