Hello Keith,

Some of these otherwise attractive Japanese metal wares are made of a spelter type material that is plated and finished in other metallic surfaces. Often the only way I can tell the difference between them and traditional mixed metal work is that the plate tends to peel with time. There's no way to tell from a distance if this is the case with your tray.
