Message Hi Martina, Most of early Japanese export pottery & porcelain were produced in the various places after the Meiji restoration near the port. And the workers were a melting pot of the different backgrounds & origins. When you try to name a name of the maker ,it becomes almost impossible. I talked about this in this forum before, but there was a big stir & struggle among the potters & the painters who had a job under the feudal lords, also in the Meiji period, they were allowed to move out of their original birth place . This was a big deal. In any case, most of these run-of-the-mill kind of the product should be valued as decorative value which can be higher or lower depending on the current demand. The vases in the picture were made early 20th century. The marking reads Dai Nippon Imayama or Konzan- zo ( made by Konzan). Since your granfather was a sailer, he probably stopped at a Japanese gift shop near the sea port and purchased these vases. Thank yor for sharing, Emiko Post a Response |
