An iconographical and textual study on the most famous Indian female poet Kāraikkālammaiyār, one of the 63 nāyanmār or Śaiva saints. This work is based on research done in India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia during 1994-2006.

In the book the idea of the poet Kāraikkālammaiyār being depicted in Indian and Southeast Asian art is discussed. As a textual source for this research the complete work of the poet translated in English is included. This work is interesting for scholars and specialists of South Indian art.

It describes the dwelling place of Śiva Naţarāja., the forest at Tiruvalangadu in South India where Śiva performed his famous dance.

As mythology tells us, Kāraikkālammaiyār formerly known as the beautiful Punitavati, literally gave up her life in this world to worship Siva and to accompany him in his dance on the cremationfields in Tiruvalangadu.
