Identification of Scene on Antique Chinese Blue and White Vase

For several years since acquiring the vase I have searched the internet without success for information on the scene, thinking it perhaps depicts a legend. I have wondered if the dignitaries are possibly some of the Eight Immortals. There are three elderly Chinese - one carries a staff and one is dressed in ornate regalia and carries a banner. Each has his own attendant. The three are intently watching a small boy who is shown among 15 large objects arranged in 4 rows in the foreground - they appear to be round shells or containers. The boy has what appears to be leaves in each hand and seems to be about to lift up one of the objects - to put the leaves inside or ?? Behind the men there is what seems to be a ceremonial boat, shaped rather like a gondola with ornate railings and high slender bow and stern. The scene takes up the entire front half of the 18" vase. I do hope someone reading the Forum can help me with identification - I am so curious.
