Invention of the Mouth Atomizer in Asia

Message
Greetings,

I am curious to learn if a Mouth Atomizer was originally developed and used in East Asia for spraying paint or color. This eventually led to the invention o fth eairbrush in the west, but I can find almost nothing on earlier usage in the East. The only refference I have found so far is one by Richard Kruml, who authored an article on in the Grove Dictionary of Art.

It is about the Jpaanese technique of Kirifuki or fukibokashi.

"Fine spray effects were also achieved by blowing through a right-angled bamboo or metal tube,
of which one end was dipped into the pigment, which was distributed via a gap at the vertex by capillary action."

I would like to find out anything more about this process.

This image shows the procedure. It can even be done with two straws>
