Yue Minjun & Chinese contemporary art

Message
Yue Minjun, a Beijing based artist was born in 1962.

He is one of the central characters in the Chinese pop art or cynical realism movement that emerged in the 1990s.

To that point, little was known of Chinese contemporary art.

The cynical realism movement is an overt political critique, which was a reaction to the events of Tiananmen Square and the suppression of the avant-garde art movement by the Chinese authorities.

Cynical realism reflected the emerging social temperament and the growing indifference and disillusionment with the control and oppression of the neo-communist regime.

Yue Minjun is best known for his frozen laughing figures, images that represent himself. His art is essentially about his personal confrontation with reality. His figures are presented in a contrary way against a background of common symbols of everyday life.
