Help with bronze Meiji Japanese Urns

Message
I bought this pair of Japanese bronze urns at a Palm Beach auction. Someone had converted them into tables. I have some questions regarding the condition and whether or not to restore them.

Photos can be viewed at http://www.flickr.com/photos/23676403@N07/sets/72157622812193064/

The urns measure 18" tall and have a diameter of about 7-8" (12" diameter if you count the handles).

Each urn has two scenes, each one unique and well detailed. The handles and bases of both urns share the same motiffs, but are also unique and differ from each other. Seems like a lot of time/skill went into making these urns.

The base is signed, but because the urns were converted into table, the base has been drilled to fit a metal rod (for support) and the hole goes through the first character of the artists name.

I also think the patina may have been removed.

Could anyone look at the signature and tell me who the artist is? Age?

Has the patina been removed, and if so, are these vases of good enough quality to re-patina?

Is there any point to having the drilled hole repaired in the base?

Thanks.
