Re: Wooden Screen

The wood and stone-carving shows good respect for the traditional Chinese style. However, I think I detect a bit of Japanese influence in some of the Birds and possibly the Three Friends of Winter motif atop the frame.

The framing of the stonework and that purplish stain used to achieve the rosewood effect have much in common with Chinese furniture produced during the late 20th century in several spots in Asia, including Hong Kong and Taiwan.

My visceral feeling is that the screen most likely was made in Taiwan during the 3rd quarter of the 20th century. This would account for the suspected Japanese influence, as Taiwan was a colony of Japan from the end of the 19th century through World War II. However, Hong Kong is certainly a viable runner-up. If Mainland China was the source, the screen probably would have been made either in the 1950's or after 1975, because the country was preoccupied with political campaigns in the interim.

Best regards,

Bill H.
