The rust colored areas are just that, rust,
otherwise known as iron oxide. There is a
possibility that the iron oxide rose to the
surface of the jade, and with nearby moisture
formed this color. Jade will sometimes be
dropped into a bucket of rusty nails in order to
leach the rust onto the jade and make it appear
old.Get a 10 powered loupe and look closely for
raised areas of blackish iron hematite. A stain
could have been used to create the iron color,
but if you find raised hematite cones, then you
know that the color is real. These hematite
deposits can form only after an extended period
of the jade being buried or in contact with
moisture.
