This photograph indeed does lend itself to a great deal of interpretation. I would speculate the dim right-hand characters to read 'Great Japan' (Dai Nippon), while those on the left begin with two that possibly form the name 'Gyokushu'. The last character in that stack is more of a blur, though this is the usual spot for 'sei' or ''zo' (made by). The middle is more recognizable as 'Satsumayaki' (Satsuma ware), written under the typical circled cross.
