Help with subject matter of okimono

Bought this great okimono, but it needs some repair. I'm trying to find out the folk story behind the scene to be sure it is repaired correctly.

There are 2 oni, one pushing a cane pole to move the lotus leaf boat, the other has his hand on his chin...sort of just looking up.

The middle character is holding his hand up while looking down at his lap. There is a peg on his lap, so something is missing. Also, the upright hand seems to be holding something like a leash or strap. I was thinking he might be holding a frog or turtle that was tethered, but I want to be sure before I have it repaired.

I also notice there is a remnant on the head of the middle character...I think this is a remnant of a ribbon used to hold his hair knot.

Middle character has claws, so he is also some type of demon/oni or mythological creature/man.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Tim
