Special Asian Furniture style in this antique Chinese desk. First, it is attractive with its reddish brown finish and highly decorative carvings of geometric and floral patterns. The drawers have a working locking mechanism and when removed reveal a hidden compartment. It is also special in that the carvings are repeated on the back side--facing the public. So perhaps it was crafted for use for a person of importance. The "A"-frame legs are reminiscent of the Ming style but the rest of the desk suggests the Qing Dynasty period.
