The top of the tazza shows the 'Bāguà' (八卦) the eight divinatory trigrams of the Book of Changes (Yìjīng - 易經, often rendered as 'I Ching'). |

Subject:Re:clarification of translation of Chinese seal
Posted By: Sherry B Sun, Oct 27, 2019 Does the seal actually state something? I can't tell if it's the Chinese language - not too clear to me. I do thank you for all the information. Does the seal name the artist, region, year or any specific information? I found a similar tazza on-line with a different seal and slightly different border. I was wondering how to compare the two with dates. Very interested. |

When flipped 90-degrees right, into proper reading position, it says "Tong zhi nian zhi" (同治年製) in mandarin pinyin transliteration. Literally, this means "Made in the Tongzhi years" but usually is read as "Made during the Tongzhi reign" (1862-1874). |
