Subject:Chinese Qing Dynasty hexagonal ceramic wucai bowl mark
Posted By: Lisa Miller Mon, Jun 18, 2018 IP: 2600:8802:4100:1fd0:

Can anyone help me break down the marks on this Wucai ceramic hexagonal bowl? I think the mark is from the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911 (Jiajing Emperor). It really is a beautiful bowl, and I have seen similar ones that were quite expensive. I have never seen one that was 8 sided. The outside of the piece is one color. It actually looks like it was wood fired. It is in extremely good condition. Would love to know the value if possible, but more importantly I would like to break down the mark.

The mark says "Made for the Zhonghe Hall in the xinhai year (1671) of the Kangxi Reign during the Great Qing Dynasty" (大清康煕辛亥中和堂製 - Da Qing Kangxi xinhai Zhonghe tang zhi). However, the hues in the palette and firing characteristics of the biscuit combine for a modern appearance, in my opinion.

I've added a link to a different bowl in the British Museum with a foreshortened period mark. Note the different calligraphic style, which is more identifiable with the Kangxi era.

Best regards,

Bill H.

It appears this object exists only on Google these days. You should be able to find it searching Google using the following: 康煕辛亥中和堂製 british museum

Thank you Bill for your response. I found some other like pictures with same color palette and design (see attached). I purchased this piece over 10 years ago, but know it came from a collector that auctioned and consigned a lot of his pieces. I only purchased this one because I loved the design and thought it was quite beautiful. Do you know the value of this kind of piece?

I've never purchased anything quite like your octagonal bowl and have no recollection of ever seeing one at auction, but then decorative pottery is not especially my thing. However, I do have a small collection of Kangxi to Qianlong porcelain ware in related motifs, as well as a Guangxu B&W porcelain bowl 9-inch bowl with the same sort of fish. So I am familiar with matters of pattern, palette and painting style.
