Subject:Need Help Identifying Artist
Posted By: John OConnor Sat, Sep 14, 2019 IP: 108.14.64.177

I have come across some (what appears to be wquite old) Chinese or Japanese calligraphy and a watercolor. I am starting with the watercolor painting and trying to identify artist marks. Help please.

Thanks - John

法眼永徳画 - Hōgan Eitoku-ga - Paited by Hōgan
(Eye of Law - Buddhist title, given to Edo period painters) Eitoku
Seal,
藤原 -Fujiwara -This name was used by several Kanō School painters. Kanō Eitoku 狩野永徳 -1543-1590 - there are only a few pictures left of him.
Could be more likely Kanō Eitoku 狩野永悳 1815-1891 - but the toku was written differently.
He has used similar Fujiwara seal.
Probably a deliberate counterfeiting trick.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks - good information - is there a good way to determine if real or counterfeit? Is there someone you recommend.
