Subject:Seeking information on a Chinese sculpture
Posted By: Cynthia MckInney Tue, Oct 01, 2019 IP: 76.113.87.109

I inherited a sculpture and I'm seeking information about it. An art dealer friend thinks it may be Ming Dynasty Chinese. Attached are a few pictures. The sculpture appears to be of a woman, perhaps a goddess, is made of painted wood. She is approximately 25" tall. The provenance is Wright Ludington, a well-known art collector of Asian art. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello,

This is a statue of Guan Yin, a Buddhist bodhisattva known as Avalokiteśvara, the goddess of compassion.
Difficult to tell from photos if it is a Ming or a Qing Dynasty made statue. The state of the polychrome and the wood shows a few hundred years old. And the style might well be Ming.
Have a nice day.
