Subject:Republic period hat stand? Caligraphy translation
Posted By: George Bain Sat, Oct 12, 2019 IP: 2a02:c7d:5667:b200:6

Hello

I wondered if anyone could translate the writing (im guessing it is a poem?) on this hat stand or scroll holder (28cm high). There is also a mark to the base however it is quite faded.

It is quite grubby and has one or two hairlines, but i am gong to clean it up as best i can.

I believe it is Liu Hai who is riding the three legged toad, I dont know who is riding the stork, perhaps Shoulau?.

Thank you for your time and hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me 🙂

Kind regards

George

青山福海 - Green hills and happy seas
xx三位 - xxsanwei
江西 - In Jiangxi
願和軒作 - Made by Gu Hexuan (I hope my reading is correct)

Lower picture depicts immortal Liu Hai, Folk Deity of Wealth riding on the three-legged toad.
On the upper picture the same Liu Hai is depicted in form of a crane with Shoulao, the God of Longevity on his back.
According to one legend Liu Hai, after abandoning his worldly life and becoming a Taoist, he made the immortals pill, and after taking it his body gradually turned into a crane and flew into the sky.

With regards,
I.Nagy

thank you so much for all of that information. It is great to know more about it.

Is the 'Made by Gu Hexuan' mark the one on the base? I could not find any information from that name yet.

thanks again

George

Dear George,
After more serious working on the other possible way of readings of the signature I found the right reading, which is confirmed by Chinese sites.
Signature reads,
鎮和祥作 -Made by Zhen Hexiang
Bottom marking,
劉鎮和祥 - Liu Zhen Hexiang

It is a late Qing or early Republic era item.

Hi I.Nagy,

The first character of the mark, as translated, actually is pronounced 'Yuan' in mandarin, with a meaning of 'willing' and 'to hope'. It isn't a surname, although 'Xuan" is. Also might be a studio name. However, I couldn't find any record of such a mark using Google.

Best regards,

Bill H.
