Subject:Request your help translating writing on Chinese painting
Posted By: Roger Fri, Nov 22, 2019 IP: 2601:281:c202:b68a:b

Hello All,
I would greatly appreciate any help translating the slip of paper on the back of this Chinese Painting. I.Nagy has already translated the signature (thank you), however, I did not post a picture of the slip of paper tacked to the back of the painting. Thank you much!

Hi,

The letters themselves mean that paper crane goes through the peony. My humble understanding is that this reflects felicity and propitiousness.

Best,
Brad

It is a record done by a later owner,
I read it,
紙凮四鳥牡丹 - Paper, landscape, four birds, peony

With regards,
I.Nagy

Dear Brad,

This posting does have an antecedent.
You can refer the Nov. 18 posting from Roger and my answer on the following day.
Based on this, the inscription on this slip is clearly an abbreviated title given by a later owner.
紙 -(On) Paper
凬 - Stands for 風(景) Landscape, scenery
四鳥 - Four Birds (On the painting the painter
clearly indicated 四朋 "Gathering of Four" (in classical Chinese interpretation - in modern Chinese interpretation "Fou rFriends"
牡丹 - Peonies

With regards,
I.Nagy

Similar to what I. Nagy suggested (using a simplification of the character 鳳), I believe the slip reads as follows:

紙鳳穿牡丹, simply: "paper. phoenix and peony".
