Was given this large framed kalaga , 80" x 46". Would really appreciate your insight on its cultural origin and period.
Thanks!

Tony

I see a lot of comparables on the internet. They are historically Burmese (now Myanmar) but the modern ones, including yours, could also have been made in neighboring Thailand or elsewhere. They are mostly 20th or 21st century tourist/export items.

Dear Tony,

I would say, this is from Myanmar (Burma). The subject might be derived from the Ramayana. Most of them stem from 20th century nowadays. I think yours is as well. But it is a nice work really.

With kind regards

Madria

For comparison, here is a 19th-early 20th century kalaga from Burma (now Myanmar). My first thought on seeing yours is that it was made in modern times at one of the many antique copy fabrication shops at Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Best regards,

Bill H.
