Subject:"Squirrel" painting scroll
Posted By: Tony W. Tue, Mar 12, 2024 IP: 23.243.126.110

Sorry about the posting of the "Monkeys" painting scroll, by accident, I submitted it without further detailing comment! Would really appreciate your help on the artist's info :)

On this "Squirrel" painting scroll, it is a large one (height 7'), and unfortunately, the painting has faded so much! Based on the remaining parts, with painting style and technique AND part of a barely readable seal, I do hope that some of our experts here could help to shed some light onto who the artist might be. This one also came from Japan years ago, together with the "Monkeys" one and others.
Many thanks!

Tony

good quality. post the pic of the seal please, might know it.
What you refere to as fading is actually the surface of the painting over centuries eaten up and chipped away. The upper layer is going away and it remains the part below that carries less and less of the painted ink.
later 20th century mounting.

Hi Peter,
I did post a photo of the seal, as shown, and that’s all what was left of it!
You are right, of course, about the right term / phenomenon to describe what has happened to the painting in this case, over the years🙏
It’s a long shot, but let’s hope that possible artists who were good at painting squirrel / in that style would be identified or narrowed down, then the remaining part of the seal could come into play to compare to the reference ones😊
Though briefly, I’ve learned something new about Asian arts/ painting from you and others through each inquiry. Thank you 🙏
