Subject:Possible Ming Dynasty Calligraphy Scroll Panels
Posted By: Maire Swallow Thu, Mar 14, 2024 IP: 2a00:23c8:3a09:7c01:

Hi,

I would really appreciate some assistance with dating these 4 panels, I have been told they are Ming Dynasty but I am not sure the seal mark corresponds to this period. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Maire

The inscription on the panels is the long poem of the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi, titled "Song of the Pipa Player" (白居易 琵琶行)
It is not possible to determine the age of scrolls
only from the attached pictures.
Probably, it would help if you could upload the full image of the last panel where the two seals are located, it is likely that above them is the whole colophon with the full name of calligrapher - perhaps with date.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Colophon;
俊楠大兄大人雅屬
侶昉鮑怡
Respectfully calligraphed for my esteemed big brother Jùnnán
Lǚfăng Bào Yí
Upper seal,
侶昉 Lǚfăng (Companion of dawn) - Pseudonym
Lower seal,
鮑怡卮印 - Private seal of Bào Yí

Unfortunately, as the result shows, it is not dated. I can't find the name of the calligrapher either on the net or in my related handbooks.
As for its age, one can only guess. I would date it to a later Qing dynasty, but I may be wrong.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Agree with a late Qing date; the syntax of the dedication was common in the 19th and into the 20th century.

Looks like decent work to me. Mikeoz can comment better on the quality of the seal carving, but those seem quite good too.
