Subject:Help to read inscription from Yokohama Meiji (?) porcelain plate
Posted By: McNub Wed, Mar 20, 2024 IP: 94.69.234.20

Hi everyone
I recently bought some porcelain dishes at auction. I mostly collect European porcelain but at this auction I found some very nice Japanese dishes that no one is interested to buying and I bought them at a very low price. 3 of them are Meiji period Kutani porcelain signed in katakana characters タラス and I read the name Tarasu. The other one I try to read but it is impossible for me to read the Kanji. From some comparisons from photos I recognized the characters for Nippon and Yokohama but I can't read the others. Can any one help me Please?
The other question about this plate is what is that the show portrays. I can't understend. Is it some japanece folk story? Does any one know what the portrays show?
Many Thanks to any one will be help me!

You are right about Nihon and Yokohama, on the left it reads Morita 守田 Seizo 製造 (Morita Manufacturing).
The kanji on the other picture looks to me like zero and Ku 九 (=9). No idea what it means, productnumber perhaps?
I could not find any information about this Morita, there was a Satsuma pottery artist Morita Tokuichi, but his name was witten as 森田.
Marks with Nihon dated usually from 1890 till 1920, so Meiji looks likely.
Regards,
Martin.

The plate is decorated with pictures of paraphernalia used in the festivals of local shrines in Japan e,g, pillar decoration, divine palanquin, masks, decorative swords, drums, figurines etc.

With regards,
I.Nagy
