I recently inherited this 83 piece set from my grandmother. It belonged to a friend of the family that received it as a wedding gift in 1886. I have researched and can't find anything like this. Some are marked Satsuma on the bottom and some have artist's names. Can anyone help me identify this set? Thanks so much!

The mark reads "Satsuma" in Hiragana characters: さつま.
Export porcelain from the first half of the 1900's.
No maker mark, so I can't help you with that.

I picked up several pieces and looked at the bottom. This is one of the few I found that looks like a possible maker's mark.

The mark also reads "Satsuma", this time in Katakana characters: サツマ.
The 3 most used character sets in Japanese are Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana. In Kanji "Satsuma" looks like this: 薩摩, sometimes with a shortened 2nd Kanji like this: 薩广.
So now you have all 4 possibilities.
