Those of you near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada have a wonderful exhibit in town. For Labor Day we ran up there to see the "Treasures of China" exhibit at the Museum of Civilization. It is in conjunction with the National Museum of China. It consists of 120 objects from prehistoric tools through late Qing (1911) ceramics. See it if you can. 23 items are considered national treasures.

They allow you to take photos without a flash. Do so. The exhibit catalogue can best be described as a crummy pamphlet.

I'll post a few of the photos that came out (I was shooting freehand with an older digital camera). Here are some of my favorites.

1) A Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC) Battle Ax
2) The signature piece of the show - A Ming Xaude period (1426-1435 AD) Blue and White flask
3) Jade Vase (Qing, I think - It's not in the catalogue)

PS The only thing better than this exhibit was the exhibit of 60 Renoir Landscapes at the National Gallery. But that has left town by now.

After seeing all the copies and repros, I thought it would be refreshing to see real Chinese art objects.
