Subject:Anyone familiar with old chinese figurines?
Posted By: jeff Wed, Feb 27, 2008 IP: 67.176.236.142

Hello. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea how old this figurine might be? Or perhaps can point me in the direction of a good resource? Thanks! :-)

Dear Jeff,

You need to show more pictures, especially the pictures showing the bottom, the back, and complete image at a distance, and a close-up on its glaze.

It appears to be an old item, but we need to see more pictures to determine its age.

The picture depicts a daughter-in-law breast-feeding her aged mother-in-law.

Dear Jeff

It is a figurine of daughter-in-law breastfeeding mother-in-law. When the time of war, disaster, and chaos in China they are running for their life, and have nothig to eat. The the young men in the family joined the armies just the old, children and women left behind, daughter-in-law show her gratitude to her husband's parents. The figurine depicts gratitude.

Daughter-in-law and mother-in-law in every household are not get along well with each other, I think this figurine depicts unity also.

Sometimes this kind of figurine happens to be father-in-law who drinking milk from her breast.

I do not know the age of your figurine, more pictures esp at the base. Other knowledgable members would date it for you.

Have fun
Anita Mui

Hi,
as noted the "Filial daughter-in-law" was a popular subject for potters during the 19th & 20th centuries.
We would need to see more of Jeffs figure to determine age & possible kiln although Shiwan is possible & from the small pic provided I`d guess it`s a 20thC piece. Anita`s is pretty new it seems.

Here`s a very nice piece from Shiwan & early 20thC, sorry the pics not better.

Phil.
