Your Japanese vase in a basket or crescent moon form (can't see the top in your picture) is decorated in heavy form of what is known as 'Moriage' style slip painting. The design seems to consist of very stylized phoenix medallions atop a 'sgrafitto' ground of swirling arabesques. It might have been used to display 'ikebana' flower arrangements and probably dates to circa the 'Nippon' period or around 1890 through the 1920's.
