Subject:Help requested with Japanese mark on pottery
Posted By: Artis Sun, Apr 11, 2010 IP: 97.81.214.245

This is a large stoneware pottery vase about 18". Can anyone help me ID the mark on the bottom? And what is this kind of glaze decoration called?
It has been been repaired but it is so unique, I would like some input on it if possible. Thank you.

The two stacks of kanji across at the top of the mark read from the right downward as 'Dai Nippon' (Made in Imperial Japan) and Kyoto (the old royal capital). Beneath them the single stack reads Matsura Sei San (Selection Made by Matsura).

The maker's name might also be read as Matsumura.

I did a cursory check of my favorite web mall and found nothing for porcelain under either of the possibilities. Perhaps someone has heard of the artist?

Best regards,

Bill H.
