Subject:Bowl with American Flag - American Factory?
Posted By: Chris Tue, Jan 03, 2012 IP: 68.198.198.191 Hello all. Here are a few pictures of a bowl that I have. One is an enlargement of the stamp. |

Posted By: Bill H Thu, Jan 05, 2012 The mark seems to begin at top right with the character 'yong' (eternal), but the rest is a mystery to me too. The decoration seems to be applied by transfer with color dabbed on by hand, suggesting it was produced at a Hong Kong or Macau decorating factory using a blank made elsewhere in China. |

Posted By: rat Thu, Jan 05, 2012 I have no insights on this one, but which is the character you think is "visit"? I see the mark as: Yong (Forever) X (no idea) cai (color) X (no idea) chang (factory). |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Jan 20, 2012 I'll toss out another proposed rendition of this mark (using Big5 encoding): mt (Yong Sheng Cai Shi Chang), which might be translated as 'The Ever-Victorious Enameled Ornament Factory'. |

Posted By: Chris Tue, Jan 24, 2012 That could be the best translation I've received. I'd still like to know the date of this bowl. The woman's dress leads me to believe it may be a modern reproduction... |

Posted By: Bill H Wed, Jan 25, 2012 This piece probably is no older than the fourth quarter of the 20th century. The essental motif looks to have been laid down by decal and washed over with anemic colored enamels in a manner heretofore associated with decorating factories in Macau and Hong Kong. However, I've seen an example recently of a vase with such transfer decoration in a different pattern that the owner said came from a museum shop in Guangzhou. This suggests that local Guangdong kilns such as those at Shiwan may be supplying the gift shops with transfer-decorated wares, although it's possible that the Macau and Hong Kong factories are doing so since colonial rule ended in both territories. |
