Would love some information on this finely painted tiger on silk. My dad brought it back from Japan in 1947.

This typical of tiger paintings on silk which were sold unframed from the stalls along the Ginza in Tokyo after the war. The ferocity and brillaint colors of the generic tigers made them very attractive souvenirs and rolled, were easy to transport. I confess That I bought two large ones in 1950, had them mounted in massive, mahonagny frames when I got home, and they still hang in the family home in California. Although I have traveled to Tokyo twice a year for the past 30 years, I no longer see these paintings for sale.

Were these actual paintings or prints, do you know? also do you know who the artist was. I love all the artwork my dad brought home from japan and would never part with them. He passed on a great love of the japanese people.

These are all original paintings, probably by young atrists trained specifically to do tigers. Other paintings on silk included tiger cubs, Geishas, cherry blossoms, etc. Since they were available in many of the stalls along the Ginza at that time, they may have been turned out by a school of artists using generic marks.

I have one very similar that my dad brought back from Japan when he was in the Jayforce, from New Zealand. Just after the war on peace keeping mission. I thought it was the same painting, that is how similar they look.
