Subject:George Zee and Co.

I also have a coffee table carved with copper inlay and another material Im not sure what it is. My husbands grandfather brought it back from WWII as well. I know the factory closed in the 90's but. Im curious about the Co. was it like a dept. store or a fine furniture store?
I cant find much about it on the internet. any clues would be helpful

As far as I know it started as a manufacturer of mainly teak and comphor wood furniture, but in time started outsourcing the manufacture and just added their name on furniture made by others that I presume the company selected or commissioned. The quality varies in the carving from the many examples I have seen.

Im sure many are curious if there is any value to the pieces we all possess.. from the postings I have seen.. the pieces vary and don't seem to be from any specific collection. Is there any way to find out about the company's history? Our piece has copper/gold carvings or inlays if you will. It depicts a mountain scene with a village. The stain is dark and the wood I would presume is teak. Thank you for your posting.

My Sister has in her possession two pictures that have wood carvings on teak wood and inlays of jade and other fine ivory by George Zee & Co. She has had these for approx 40 years and even then, they were bought at a estate sale. One of the pictures is numbered Z23580. Both are numbered.

I have two little display type tables that my Wifes Grandma bought way back when. She wants me to cut the legs off to make them different heights. I flipped it over to take the saw to it and noticed that it was really well built and had a tag stating "George Zee & Co LTD. Kiln Dried Art Carved Manufacturers. Factory: 83 Hung To Road. Kwun Tong, Kowloon, H.K. Tel. K-684264. Made in Hong Kong. No. 126400." These tables are a little taller than a dinner table and I would think a vase or something would usually site atop. They are nice and a dark reddish stained wood.

Where can I find more about these tables and determine their value? If they are worth anything I'll keep my saw in its case.

Thanks, Jason

My family has some pieces purchased in Hong Kong in l960s, all with numbered metal plates. One that was used for storage was originally a bar, with places for bottles and a top that lifts up. We have no idea how to put it back together for that purpose and we wanted to find out by seeing a picture. I'm assuming from the postings that the files corresponding to those numbers on the metal plates are no longer available.

my father had furniture shipped back to the u.s.from the george zee company in the late 60's. he was in hong kong traveling on naval reserve business. i have a good bit of the furniture presently. all of it is teak wood. among the items are a couple of desks with chairs, two coffee tables, three chests of drawers, four end tables, two nesting tables, & a stand that is hard to describe. my brother has some of the zee furniture as well. dad must have known george zee as his daughter, wendy, spent a few weeks at our home in washington,d.c. to my knowledge she is still living some where in california. i am currently haveing some of the pieces refinished & am interested in finding out more information about the company myself (especially the furinture's values).

TOM COCHRANE,

I remember you, your family, especially your grandmother, Ms. Graves; she was the editor of Washington Post. She and Shirley, your mom took me out shopping and we had a delightful lunch. You and I had hamburger together. Dan went to the museums in Washington D.C with me. Bill took me to lunch at the Senate Dinning Room. I had a great time staying at your home during Christmas when I was young. Shirley is patient, gracious and kind for being so tolerant with me. She is always there, she is a wonderful friend. The CONCHRANE (GRAVES) Family is WONDERFUL.

Life is about fond memories.

Thomas-
From time to time I have tried to do some research on the company. The interesting thing that we have in common is that my mom(Wendy) knew your dad. My whole family spent a few days at your dad's house in DC when I was about 5 years old. A very respectable man as I remember. As for the furniture itself, I know little about the value. I am interested in seeing what other furniture is out there to see some of my grandfathers work. If you have any pictures, please email me at [email protected]. Good luck with the search.

I recently was curious to see if there was a trademark on this hand carved beautiful coffee table my father brought home from the war. It says George Zee & co, Kiln dried art. 122 Nathan Rd Kowloon Hong Kong #68 34966. I am looking for information on it as well.

Thomas;
Have you had any luck with value of the items you have from George Zee Co.? My Father also sent a truckload of furniture from this company in the late 60's. He traveled to Hong Kong from Vietnam on R & R and meet Mr. Zee. As he sat in the factory office Mr. Zee had his clothes sent out for laundering, offering my father a fine afternoon of tea and personal selection. The contents of my mother's home are being sold for her benefit. The appraisals for these items are appallingly low!! The full dining set; rosewood table with 2 extensions, 6 side chairs ands 2 arm chairs as well as the full china cabinet are valued at $700 total) The carved chests and secretary style desk are valued even less. All are in near perfect condition. My family is very upset that our mother may not receive an accurate price and this will limit her care in the future. Please contact me by email if you can, as I live nearby in NC and have very limited time to insist on changes to her financial guardians plans. Thanks much

I have just purchased 8 beautiful George Zee & Co. chairs and would love more information about the company and the chairs' age. The numbers on the metal plates are 146128,142578 etc. (not the type of number with the year followed by a dash and more numbers). If anyone knows from what years this number series dates, I would be most appreciative.

I too have something from the late 60's that my mother had a friend buy in hong kong for her. It is a large black cedar chest with brass in the corners. The sides and top have very intricate hand carving scenes. I also have the original paperwork on the purchase. They paid $580 in 1967, I wonder what it is worth now?

I have scoured the internet over the last few months and I wish I knew the value of our table. I know that it was bought in Hong Kong -not sure the date.. it also has very intricate carvings and copper inlay from what I can tell.. yet I cant seem to find any comparable items on any Antique sites.. please if you find out anything more.. I would love to solve this mystery..
thanks

I'm surfing also to try to find out about the glass top kidney shaped coffee table, bar, nesting tables. and tea table with four stools that my father bought while he was in hong kong back in'61. these tables are ornately carved, no inlay work , and the teak has been bleeched. I found the original order for these but have no idea of what their value would be today. If any one comes up with ideas of where i can look please let me know.

Hi there. I bought this jewelry box last week at an auction and was searching online trying to find out anything I can. I came across this forum . Can someone tell me where I could find more info on this piece? It's wood stain is fading and the brass is tarnished so Im thinking it's old. The tag says George Zee &Co. LTD Made in Hong Kong and Serial No: Z-28222.
My cam stinks so it's hard to see the tag or details.
Thanks!

'Old' in eye of beholder. Stamped brass with material added to color lines can corrode in 20 years less depending where it live.

Not really more to say about box except made by factory you know, probably 1960s.

Most widely agreed definition 'antique' is 100-years-old. Some would disagree because so many factory products now that age. Very limited number people would say George Zee Co. products 'art'.

Good luck,
Cal

Subject:George Zee and Co. - dining room set

I recently acquired an antique, hand-carved George Zee dining room set as part of a home purchase. (Interesting deals on houses in this economy!) It's rosewood, the table is approx. 72" and has 8 chairs. VERY PRETTY! The home seller had it custom-made. I would like to sell it - any idea how I could go about this? Thanks!

If home seller had Zee factory make for home, is not antique.

No George Zee factory furniture is antique.

Best sell locally, crating and shipping cost to elsewhere would be greater than value of your used furniture.

Good luck,
Cal

Do you still have your George Zee furniture?
I am always interested in the modernist Zee furniture.
