Subject:Panels, hand carved with gilded gold - assistance identifing
Posted By: Julie Sat, Feb 22, 2014 IP: 71.211.176.239 Hello. These were purchased these from an estate sale in Northern Ohio. There are 21 panels total measuring 11.5 x 16" each. Hand carved with gilded gold finish, and some have red lacquered ends. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |

If that's the case here, I'd estimate them probably to be no older than mid to late 20th century. If the carving is all wood, then they might be older. |

Posted By: Julie Wed, Feb 26, 2014 Thanks for your reply, Bill. They definitely appear to be all wood, but we will look into it further. Any idea what they were used for? |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Feb 28, 2014 Traditionally, such panels were used to decorate temple and home altars, Chinese beds and other home furniture. However, a lot of the latter day pieces have been made simply as home decorations, including for export to western markets. Here's a picture of a circa mid-20th century decorative example in a frame. |
