Subject:Indentifying a mark on bottom of vase
Posted By: RB Fri, Apr 28, 2017 IP: 2a02:0c7f:020f:a200:

Any luck identifying the mark on the bottom of this vase? it may not even be a makers mark, I know nothing of this.

The mark is saying:
- on top: Dai Nippon (great Japan).
- on the right: Choshuzan (which is the maker).
- on the left: Kagetsu Ga (painted by Kagetsu).
- in the middle right: Satsuma (region where it was made).
- in the middle left: Mibae (probably the name of the studio)
The symbol in the middle at the bottom is a seal using only the 1st character of "Mibae": "Mi", it may be the studio sealmark.

It's the same text as on the picture below.
Late 19th century.

Regards,
Martin.

I don't think the Choshuzan works were mass produced. I've seen more of these Mibae + Choshuzan marks, but with a different painter name. Most of the real mass production for the West started in the early 20th century.

Martin.
