Subject:Presumed Japanese Meiji-Era Bronze Elephant Form Censer Lid

Based on what I found looking around the web, this recumbent elephant (link) looks to be the cover for a Japanese bronze censer, probably Meiji period or a bit later. Perhaps other collectors in the forum have something like it or can comment on other possible uses and origins.

Hi Bill,

The only Japanese bronze elephant censers I have seen are from the Meiji Period and usually the whole censer is in the form of an elephant with a pagoda or pavilion as the cover.

However, since it doesn't have any holes, it could also be a lid to some other type of bronze vessel. I agree it is probably the lid to something since there is more wear to the protruding areas from being handled.

I am also open to the possibility of this being Chinese or Edo Period due to the smooth simplistic casting versus the more detailed Meiji/Tokyo School type casting.
