Subject:Help With Identification/Two Large Woodblock Prints
Posted By: Lance Frazer Mon, May 22, 2017 IP: 2601:0204:4001:3df5:

Again, I must ask the learned members of the Forum for assistance in print identification. I have done a number of different searches for these images, with no success, so will be most grateful for any help.

Both are quite large, approximately 15 inches by 30 inches. To my uneducated eye, they appear to be modern, or perhaps modern renderings of old images. In good condition, pretty nicely framed and matted, with very little noticeable wear. Both are, I believe, by the same artist, and I would be most grateful for any assistance in the identification of the artist and any and all information about the prints.

The first one depicts Tao Yuanming 4th-5th century poet), the second Wang Zhong (late Han dynasty general). They are both by someone surnamed Du 杜, but I am not sure of the given name, which is 敬 plus something else, perhaps a variant I don't recognize.

Hi Rat,

I think it is Gang, 剛 (刚 in the simplified form).

Thus: Du Jing Gang - 杜敬剛.

And I think these are paintings not prints.

Bingo, thanks mikeoz! Always good to pay attention to the seals... I first guessed the character as some variant of 刻 that somehow inserted a 刀 and 丶 for reasons unclear. The seal refuted this line of speculation but 剛 didn't come to my mind, I see that you are right as usual though!

Agree that these are fairly recent paintings, though the bio below states that Du was born in 1917, so he may no longer be with us. One or two additional works of his can be seen here:

My thanks to you both. I did find one reference to this artist (a painting being auctioned on Ebay), and the style certainly looks the same. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHINESE-ANTIQUE-20TH-CENTURY-ORIGINAL-DU-JING-GANG-PAINTING-/142073745428?hash=item2114415014%3Ag%3A~ZMAAOSwAuZX4qQ6
