Subject:Older Cloisonne Jar?
Posted By: Bokaba Thu, May 25, 2017 IP: 2605:e000:af16:3b00:

This cloisonne jar is about 11 inches tall. It looks a bit rougher and grittier than the modern cloisonne pieces I have seen. It is also marked "CHINA" on the bottom, so possibly from the late 19th/early 20th Century. Any ideas?

What are your thoughts Beadiste?

What a nice old jar!

The "CHINA" stamp appears on items made for export, as such a country of origin stamp was required by US law in the first decades of the 20th century. The heyday of cloisonne exports to the West seems to have been the 1920s - 30s, presumably diminishing in 1937 when the Japanese invaded.

This leaf scroll pattern was also used by the Beijing Enamel Company after the 1950s, but it seems to most often occur as a monochrome white background. Older pieces show the scroll leaves and flowers colored, as in your piece.

What a nice patina on your jar! The enamel seems to still be in good condition. I like the casual cheerfulness of the design and the harmonious colors.

For comparison, two JingFa pieces that are likely from around the 1960s-80s, and small items from the earlier decades of the 20th century.
