Subject:Mark on pair of Japanese vases
Posted By: Martin Fri, Jun 23, 2017 IP: 84.26.216.123

Hi,

In my never ending search to find new names (marks) on antique Japanese ceramics, I found this mark on the body of a pair of vases (see 2nd photo). On the right it says Kakimoto Sei 柿本 製, but I'm totally lost what's on the left. Perhaps the last character is "Ga" (painted) 画. But I can't decipher the other 2.

Maybe that the Forums Japanese / Chinese language experts can shine some light in the dark?

Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Martin.

'Unkai ga' (雲海画 - painted by Unkai). So, the artist or craftsman commissioned for the decoration was Unkai (an artist's name)

Guy.

Guy,

Also thanks again. I could not have found this name without Mikeoz and you.

I'm amazed to find new names on old Japanese ceramics again and again. Unkai is unknown to me and I can't find anything on the net about Unkai, nor about Kakimoto, except that I found another Kakimoto Sei mark with Sadatomo Ga, see picture.

Regards,
Martin.
