Subject:Mark on netsuke figurine
Posted By: Brett Fri, Jul 21, 2017 IP: 69.117.76.255

I got this in a junk bin of trinkets. Any idea what the mark says (assuming it is a mark). Thanks for the help.

I can't work out the mark on your ivory netsuke. However, the deep inscribed lines are nat a mark, they are related to the figure and basket above them.

We need a much sharper picture of the bottom
Perhaps he size would also help.

As the pictures haven't reappeared, I am working from memory. Here are my observations from the pictures presented:

1) The workmanship is mediocre at best.
2) There is no patina indicating age (=new).
3) There are no Schreger lines (=not ivory). Likely, carved from plant ivory/taganut.

Conclusion: The junk bin was an appropriate place to find it.

Cheers,
Stan

Thanks for the help everyone. Oddly enough I have been trying to update photos for a few days. The security code at the bottom of the new message form was not showing a code so I was effectively locked out of posting. Also, photobucket decided to end my second account so I have been looking for alternate options. There are Schreger lines as far as I can tell. Here are some better pictures.

From the new pictures the telltale marks are in, this is a Tagua nut carving
