Subject:Kangxi Mark Plate
Posted By: Bokaba Mon, Aug 21, 2017 IP: 172.250.142.6

Dear members,

This plate has a Kangxi mark, but I am extremely doubtful it is of the period. I would suspect late 19th Century Kangxi revival period or the mark was added much later after the production of the plate. It is about 9 inches in diameter.

Thank you

Bokaba

According to Tony Allen, as a general rule, underglaze blue four-character Kangxi marks are fake and, along with fake Yongzheng and Qianlong marks, didn't come into use until the Guangxu reign (1875-1908). See "Allen's Antique Chinese Porcelain - The Detection of Fakes" (2015), page 78.

The painting style and tone of cobalt in your dish reminds me of this saucer with Star Gods motif and what I believe is a probable period mark of Xuantong (1909-11).

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Bill. I suspected this plate was definitely not Kangxi period due to the incorrect decoration and incorrect mark. I think you are right about late Qing period due to the hue of the blue underglaze and the buff colored paste with kiln grit. I have a period Kangxi plate and there is no grit, a vibrant blue decoration, and an almost blue/green tinted glaze.
