Subject:Need Help with this Chinese Carved Clay bowl! Longqing?
Posted By: Mitko Sun, Aug 27, 2017 IP: 213.114.175.246

Hello Everybody!
I need a little help with this bowl which is a total mystery to me. I must say have never seen something like it. The bowl is around 9cm x 16cm wide. It has metal body which is covered with carved brown clay like substance. The inside and the bottom are covered with similar black thing which has age related crackle.

I have seen similarly carved cinnabar lacquerware but I believe this is not the case here. The brown carved clay is relatively soft ( i.e. it is hard but does not have the hardness of a fired clay wares). If I press it harder with a fingernail or something hard it will leave mark which will then disappear with time.
It makes me think it may be clay which has not been fired or similar.

I used google image text scanning & translating program which generated the following text of the mark: 年乾大梨隆清 and translates it as "Year dry pear Longqing" which seems like nonsense to me. It this somehow related to the 16th century Chinese emperor Longqing?

I was wondering if someone here has seen similar vessels. Also any information regarding the the probable age and other history is welcome! let me know if you need additional pics!
Thanks in advance!
Best regards!

Read correctly the mark says Da Qing QianLong Nian Zhi,

大清乹隆年製

Made in the reign of the QianLong Emperor. But was probably made later.
