Hello,

Is this a Japanese print by Yoshitsuya ? Is it portraying a kabuki actor ? Can someone read the red cartouche ?

Thank you very much !

Jacob

I'm going with Yoshiiku. I couldn't find your print online. Look at this print from the Boston MFA. Note the object in front of both people.

The red cartouche reads,
かほ代尼 Kaho Daini or Daiama
Kaho, Ama locum tenens
(Ama or Bikhuni is a female monastic, The picture
depcits a seemingly false Ama, however, I cannot
understand fully the meaning of the Senryu written on the picture.
Big cartouche reads,
九代彫子兼 Nineth generation blockcutter
Kane
芳きつね Yoshikitsune (Signature)
The きつね (kitsune)part is not Kanji, they
are three variant kanas (Hentaiganas).
I do not have any idea about this name,
can be the sobriquet of the artist.
With regards,

Reading of text on the print,
Sanukita ni kasanenu, tsuyoshi
Usugoromo kirete, hakanasa
Sode no tokiito
In my rough translation sounds,
Leting it down (robe) and wearing it
one over another (looks) strong
(When) the sheer robe tears
How vulnerable is she
Disentangled yarn of the sleeve
This is a kind of Senryu, or short poetry.
With regards,
